Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AVIS drone target?

The AVIS product line is a limited-self-healing, drone shaped target. It features zero electronics, batteries, motors, or control boards.

Is it legal to shoot at drones?

Under federal law, it is illegal to shoot down any operational drone or unmanned aircraft without federal authority. The AVIS products are not functioning drones — it is a specialized target designed for kinetic C-UAS training use. Users are responsible for knowing and complying with all federal, state, and local laws.

How durable are the targets?

AVIS targets are advertised as limited-self-healing and made from flexible based material designed to withstand repeated hits that would normally destroy a powered drone. Results will vary depending on both the model of target and caliber/gauge/shot size, in conjunction with shot placement on the target. Additionally ambient temperatures will affect the flexibility of the target's material. Current testing and data has shown that AVIS targets can withstand the following under sunny, 40-85F degree, conditions at <25 yards:

AVIS-1 Data:
- 7.62x51 Ball: 20+ Hits
- 5.56/.223 Ball: 30+ Hits
- 12g Bird/Turkey/Skeet: 30+ impacts.

AVIS-2 variants tradeoff some durability for dimensional accuracy. AVIS-2 variants are intended for large order customers looking to reduce costs for C-UAS programs. Struts/arms are not rated for rifle/pistol/buckshot impacts but maintain resistance to birdshot impacts. For budget minded users, we recommend using turkey shot or smaller to maximize these target's durability.

-Tracer and hollow point rounds are not recommended for AVIS targets.
- Recommended environment temperature: 40F-85F for best results.

How can AVIS targets be used?

It's up to you, remember what goes up must come down. Train safely and responsibly.

  • Tethered: Host drone flies the target for aerial threat emulation (recommended only for trained professionals).
  • Gantry/Zipline: to simulate moving aerial targets.
  • Target stand: Cut outs for target stakes are designed into each AVIS target for static mounting.

What safety precautions should I take?

Always ensure there is an adequate backstop behind AND proper Surface Danger Zone (SDZ) beyond when using the AVIS targets. Follow all standard firearm safety protocols. Tethering and towing with a host drone use should only be performed by trained professionals.
